FROM OUR EDITOR
Dear Serendipity Readers,
Dear Friends in Recovery,
Dear ODAT/TRG Members,
When we build a house, we use tools. When we plant a garden, we use tools.
If we cook a meal, there are kitchen tools we use. And when we work
a recovery program, we use tools. There are many tools ... but one of
the most important by far is Sponsorship. The Recovery Group offers an
extensive sponsor program including:
2003 Abstinence
ABUSE ODAT
RECOVERY WRITER'S SERIES

~ FROM OUR EDITOR ~
Dear Serendipity Readers,
It is with a lot of excitement and a little trepidation that I come before
you as the new Editor of Serendipity. God works in mysterious ways,
and I welcome the challenge of this new form of service. I enjoyed my
newspaper work in high school and entered the computer field after college,
so this Trusted Servant position seems to give me the very best of both
worlds. Thank you for welcoming me to my new area of service. I have
always found Serendipity full of inspiring articles and know that I will
continue to be led by my Higher Power, as Suzanne was before me, to
bring the same quality newsletter to you that she did.
This month's Serendipity will bring you news from the Trusted
Servants we have working in many areas, articles from our members
and, from beginning to end, words to inspire, interest and inform you
about events in the world of recovery. In this cold month of February,
I hope this issue of Serendipity is one that will warm your hearts
and that you will feel the love this month is known for, with all that
surrounds you here. Please send me your comments, suggestions
and questions. This is your Serendipity and I want to keep the "Letters
to the Editor" column full of your input.
Yours in recovery,
Marty
Editor, SERENDIPITY
Newsletter of The Recovery Group

~ FOUNDER'S CORNER ~
I am very pleased to introduce to you the new Serendity Editor.
Her name is Marty, and she has been working behind the scenes
for a long time as the Serendipity Web Trusted Servant who is
responsible for preparing the newsletter each month and seeing
that it makes its way to the Recovery Website. I'm sure she will
do as excellent a job on Serendipity as she does with so many
things. A member of the ODAT committee, a singer, wife and
mother, Marty also brings excellent organizational and technical
skills to this job.
I also want to express our deep appreciation to Serendipity's
first editor who brought so much of herself to this beautiful
little newspaper. Suzanne has dedicated so much time and
energy in making our Serendipity what it is, and I don't think she
will ever truly leave us. As I personally browse issues from
1999 onward, memories and a few little tears remind me of
the dreams Suzanne had for this publication and the hard
work she put into each issue.
So ... on behalf of all the readers of the Serendipity
newsletter, deep thanks to both Marty and Suzanne.

Love in recovery,
Mari

~ FROM OUR RECOVERY ADMINISTRATORS ~
February is an eclectic month of celebration which includes Valentine's Day,
"International Friendship Month", "Responsible Pet Owners Month", and
the sharing of the gift of recovery one day at a time on The Recovery
Group!
TRG meetings continue to be a splendid daily opportunity to celebrate
recovery with our members in "real time" daily at 9:30pm Eastern.
TRG loops continue to offer the opportunity to celebrate recovery with
loop members in a more flexible time frame. The TRG WebPages are always
available to us providing many pages of recovery insight and celebration.
This gift of daily sharing is available to each of us with the assistance
of the many Trusted Servants who share their recovery through service to
others. We celebrate this generous service with a warm word of thanks
and gratitude this February.
If you would like to join with those who are reaching out in service to
others, the following loops are in need of Coordinators at this time:

~ FROM OUR ODAT COMMITTEE ~
Greetings from the ODAT loops. January has come and gone in the blink of
an eye. Here in the Pacific Northwest we have yet to see any winter...
not a good thing when summer comes and there is no snow pack for water.
January has been a quiet month for the ODAT loops. We have a few new
coordinators who are settling in to their new jobs, and recruiting other
Trusted Servants to help them.
If you aren't a member of any of the ODAT loops, there might be something
of interest to you. Take a look at our website and see what we offer:
http://www.TheRecoveryGroup.org/odat/index.html.
Thanks to all who help out.
Love to all,
Sande

Good luck in finding your sponsor. It will be one of the most important
things you will ever do for yourself . . . and your recovery.

Dear Editor of Serendipity,
What is a loop? Is it the same thing as a mailing list?
Loops are what we call our e-mail discussion lists. Members of these
loops are affectionally called "Loopies", "Loopsters" and
"Loopbuds." Many of our loops become second homes for compulsive eaters.
You can find a description of each on the Recovery Website at
www.TheRecoveryGroup.org.
Hi, I like translating Serendipity into French and sending it to my
sister in Paris. Thank you for making this possible.
Merci de votre appui de Serendipity. Nous sommes très heureux
vous faisons partie du groupe de rétablissement. Le Rédacteur

~ ODYSSEY ~
We'd like to welcome you to a new feature of Serendipity. Each month we
will bring you shares from Recovery Meditations, Odyssey, Journey to
Recovery, The Promises and many others. This month we would like to
invite you to Odyssey ~ A Personal Journey. And what a journey! The
beautiful man, who two years ago weighed 725 pounds, has shared his
amazing journey with us and his words convey to us his extraordinary
emotional, physical and spiritual renaissance.
Note: you may read all of his
Odyssey at:
http://www.therecoverygroup.org/odyssey/index.html.
In this issue of Serendipity we give you a brief excerpt written about
a year ago ... and each day the journey continues.
ODYSSEY ~ A PERSONAL JOURNEY
Dear Friends,
I spent the last 10 years in a chair. The 20 foot excursion to the
bathroom twice a day was all I could manage physically, with a shower
maybe every 3rd day if I (and my family) was lucky, I had worked my
way up to 725 pounds and felt as though every excursion was going to
cause the heart attack that would end my existence here and was just
an all around jackass to live with. Restaurants or friends would deliver
food directly to my chair, as I spent money that we did not have,
running up tremendous credit card debt in the process. After all,
what did I care? I wasn't gonna be around to have to pay for it,
and the insurance would erase the debt for my family. It was the
perfect suicide!
Nine months ago, I decided to stick around a while ... I have lost
(as of the last time I weighed - about a month now) over 265 lbs. just
over half of what my goal is. My days are filled with gratefulness
for this obsession to overeat being lifted from me! I tear up when
I think of it, as I was so close to being gone and it is such a joy
to be around now.
Food has taken a place of being merely fuel, something I never thought
possible. It was my most intimate friend and lover, I did not think
anything could or would replace it. I have been in program for 10 years,
but it has only been in me for 9 months now, and What a difference it
is making in my life, I am still in awe at the power of this program,
and as the Promises say, before I am halfway through I will have these
things coming true for me, and they are.
My days are not all smooth and rosy emotionally, but my food is good,
as I know THAT is not the answer to any of my challenges. There are
days of total exasperation, when I feel that I can do nothing right,
when my child is doing things just to see how angry I can get,
(my perception - she's actually just being 10) it's at these times that
I have to look and ask what my expectations are and if they are valid
or is it just me wanting "my way".
What a wonderful trudge this journey is turning out to be... painful and
uncomfortable while doing the work, but at the end of the day, the
feeling is so light-filled, as to be reborn into a beautiful new world.
Stay Strong!
Love and hugs,
me

Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves
could restore us to sanity.
![]()
For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority - a loving God
as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are
but trusted servants; they do not govern.
![]()
"Thus we grow. And so can you, though you be but one
man (woman) with this book (Big Book AA) in your hand.
We believe and hope it contains all you will need to
begin. We know what you are thinking. You are saying
to yourself "I'm jittery and alone, I couldn't do
that" but you can. You forget that you have now
tapped a source of power much greater than yourself.
To duplicate, with such backing, what we have
accomplished is only a matter of willingness, patience
and labor."
