Serenity PrayerDear friends in recovery,
Welcome to the July edition of Serendipity! If you enjoy the newsletter of the Recovery Group each month, please take the time to provide SERVICE to the group by sharing your experience, strength and hope with all of us -- submit a share for the next edition of the newsletter! This is your newsletter, and we need your submissions! All written contributions to Serendipity can be sent to SerendipityNewsletter@yahoogroups.com.
In this month's edition, TRG founder Mari shares her thoughts on Tradition Six, and The Recovery Group's history of not aligning itself with any outside interest, and of not asking for or accepting contributions. All SERVICE positions are filled by volunteers. In that same line, Patt writes about SERVICE on behalf of TRG administrators. Our loop spotlight of the month is WTS, Working the Steps, a loop whose mission statement states that the loop is for working the Twelve Steps within the group. Lynne invites all of us to study the Twelve Steps with WTS (Working the Steps) during July, August and September of 2001 - 12 Steps in 12 Weeks - with Danny (Big Bird). In the Tools of Recovery, Lorraine writes about the importance of SERVICE in recovery from compulsive eating (there's a theme here!) We've also included a repeat of the history of recovery meditations, in an effort to encourage all of you to perform SERVICE to TRG by submitting an original meditation to the project.
This month in Danny's Corner, in his conversation with God, Danny talks about "this OA thing." In the section dedicated to shares from Recovery Group members, Sherry talks about staying in the moment, Lizzie writes about hope in recovery, and Syl shares her Twelve Step share. In the Literature section, you will find The Promises from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous as a constant reminder of what is possible, as well as Step Seven from Reflections on the Twelve Steps of Recovery. This month's edition ends with a list of on-line meetings, OA and TRG contacts, and the Serenity Prayer.
If you have any comments on the newsletter, or have ideas about how to make Serendipity better, please send a letter to the editor to SerendipityNewsletter@yahoogroups.com.
Peace, my dear friends.

~ FOUNDERS CORNER ~
Dear Loopies,
TRADITION SIX
We have never wanted to honor Traditions and Guidelines just because they were there. We've never hidden behind them nor twisted them nor made them say anything that made no sense. The Traditions and Guidelines are here for a reason and each and every one of them are important to our community. There is no Tradition/Guideline more important than Tradition Six.
Over the years, there have been opportunities to manipulate the Traditions in order to achieve agendas ~ hidden agendas. Here we are ... an organization full of compulsive eaters who want desperately to recover from our illness. We are ripe for authors of books, manufacturers of pills, hospital treatment centers, the latest diet plan and talk therapists by the dozens. What these enterprises do is make money and that it is okay. But it is not okay to do it in the Recovery Group. I have been approached on occasion to link our community to those who tell me they want to "help." But in reading the fine print, I find that in just about every presentation to "help" is a product. A book to sell. A new diet. A program to take off weight fast. A pill. A new hospital. A new vitamin. A new surgery. Some have even wanted to know if they could purchase our mailing lists.
The Sixth Tradition tells us that The Recovery Group should never endorse, finance or lend its name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property and prestige divert us from our primary purpose. Our primary purpose?? We are here for one reason ... and that reason is to carry the message to the compulsive eater who suffers. We have no other agenda nor will we. By carrying the message and living the message we ourselves have hope of recovery. By watering down that message, we self-destruct.
With enormous pride, we ask for no contributions nor accept them if offered. The Recovery Group has no paid staff and everything we have ever done here and ever will do here is done by volunteers. Next month, I will write on the Seventh Tradition and how TRG implements that.

Love in recovery,
Mari

~ FROM OUR ADMINISTRATORS ~
Dear Members of The Recovery Group,
The Recovery Group has many Trusted Servants on our Loops and Meetings who are happy to serve you.
We want everyone to know that when you cannot find help concerning your recovery online that you can write to the TRGAdm@TheRecoveryGroup.org and we will try to work with you to find the help you need.
June marks the half way point of the year 2001 and we are still learning how best to serve each and everyone of our members on TRG.
Our 12th Step tells us to try and carry this message to compulsive eaters, and this is what The Recovery Group is all about. As each of you recover, we remind you of this step that is vital for your own recovery.
There are many service positions that still are in need of Trusted Servants, and we hope that those of you who have received recovery here will be willing to share it with others. If you feel that you are willing to share in this way, please notify the TRGAdm@TheRecoveryGroup.org and we will certainly find a position for you.
The JOY that comes from giving service and watching others recover and then see them begin to share with others is something you do not want to miss!
With love and great joy in service,
Patt

~ LOOP SPOTLIGHT ~
WTS ~ Working the Steps
~ Mission Statement ~
The WTS ~ Working the Steps list is an e-mail discussion loop with the specific mission of working the Twelve Steps within the group. Each week a designated step leader provides the members with a provocative essay on a specific step and that is followed with questions and the step leader's personal experience, strength and hope on that step. In response to this, members answer the questions and share their personal ESH with one another.
WTS begins the year in January with Step One and finishes twelve weeks later with Step Twelve. A new leader begins on April 1st with another quarter in which the members are sent essays, questions and shares relative to the 12 Steps. This procedure continues all year.
We encourage all new members to observe loop protocol for a few days before sharing with the group and look forward to all participants eventually sharing on each step. We also encourage all WTS members to have a personal Step Sponsor. A good share meaningful to all is composed of (1) how we used to be; (2) what happened to us; and (3) how we are now. For those who have not worked the steps and who are new to program the step leader's questions will be invaluable as a guide to the understanding and completion of each step.

Working the Steps Loop
Invites you to work 12 Steps in 12 Weeks
Hi, to Serendipity Readers from Lynne and Tinman, WTS Co-Coordinators,
We'd like to invite you all to study the Twelve Steps with WTS (Working the Steps) during July, August and September of 2001 - 12 Steps in 12 Weeks. Our WTS Step Leader this 3rd quarter of 2001 is Danny (Big Bird), Coordinator of our Silver Recovery loop, active member and up to just recently a Trusted Servant of JTR (Journey to Recovery), and yes, Danny is the one who writes those beautiful, inspiring, down-to-earth "Danny's Letters to God" here in Serendipity in "Danny's Corner" and which now also are on our Recovery Group website.
Danny will use his 29 years of AA sobriety and Twelve Step recovery, including 27 years of fellowship with COEs, in leading us this 3rd quarter in studying 12 Steps in 12 Weeks at WTS. Danny plans to use his beautiful "Dear God" approach in leading us through the Steps.
This Step Study starts on the WTS loop on Monday, 7/2/01, and you are all invited to join WTS to participate in it, or to participate by reading Danny's Step Essays and Shares on our WTS website. They will be posted on the WTS website within days of Danny's having posted them on the WTS loop.
The WTS website is at: http://recovery.hiwaay.net/wts/index.html
WTS (Working The Steps) is one of our Recovery Group email loops. It is an in-depth quarterly study of the Twelve Steps for compulsive eaters. As a WTS member, you receive an Essay and Step Leader's Share every week, one step per week for 12 weeks, starting with Step One on 7/2/01, and ending with Step Twelve near the end of September. (Then we start over again each quarter, working Step One the first week in January, April, July and October.) These Essays and Shares are written by a Step Leader - a different one for each quarter.
WTS members are invited by the Step Leader to share on the step being studied that week, or are welcome to share on the step they are currently working on, whatever one it is, all year long. They are also welcome to post reply sharings to what other WTS members have posted, supporting and encouraging WTS members and furthering the study of the step they shared about. These past two quarters of 2001, the sharings on WTS and the reply sharings have been very beautiful and open and honest, very inspiring and thought-provoking, very caring and encouraging - and we expect the same this 3rd quarter of WTS that starts 7/2/01.
The WTS Step Leader's Essays and Shares are also put on our WTS website, a couple days after they are shared on the WTS loop. The entire Twelve Week Step Study from the 1st quarter of 2001, and for the 2nd quarter of 2001, are now up on the WTS website, for you to read and use (as are the yearly Step Studies for 1996 through 2000).

WTS Co-Coordinator
It's easy sometimes to sit back and just reap the benefits of everyone
else's service. As a matter of fact, when I read Suzanne's message today
about needing submissions for July's Serendipity Newsletter, I thought "I
won't worry about that today, I'll do it NEXT month!" But next month I'm
sure I'll find some other excuse not to write -- or not to do some other
kind of service. So I decided I needed to share about doing service.
I've been doing various types of service in the year and a half of my
starting in OA, from just showing up at f2f meetings, to coordinating a
recovery loop, and what I have been noticing is something my sponsor told
me would happen: that I would get much more out of DOING service than I
put in! Well, folks, I have to admit that he was right -- as usual! :)
When I first started in OA and on the loops, I was a frightened, confused
overweight, unhappy lady. And at first, I was quite content to just sit
back and let everyone else do the work because I was too frightened to say
much or do much. I was isolating and homebound, so I joined the Isolation
and Homebound Loop! -- I was amazed there even WAS such a thing! And
slowly, ever so slowly, I started responding to messages on the loop. I
started going to online meetings because my sponsor told me that going to
meetings was important and I was too scared to leave my house to go to f2f
meetings, so I decided I could attend online ones.
Then there was an opportunity to do service on our loop and gradually it
snowballed until I became its coordinator. Coincidentally, the more I did
on the loops and on my program, the more weight I lost; the more I found I
could leave my house and go to f2f meetings; and I even found that I could
go to retreats and sponsor others, etc. etc. etc.!!
So, if you are one of those folks who are just sitting back and reading
this and saying to yourselves: "It's all well and good for HER, but, but
but . . .", I am saying to you here and now that if I can do it, anyone
can! Don't leave it for the next person to do. Get involved. If you are
a loop lurker, just send ONE message today to your loop. If you haven't
been getting to f2f meetings, just do some service and attend an ONE
online today. Just do SOMETHING, and I promise you that if you keep at
it, you'll get sooo much back in return!
Dear Recovery Family,
Nearly a year ago, Overeaters Anonymous informed the Recovery Group
that the use of any OA-approved literature, such as from "Twelve Steps
and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous," "For Today," and
certain slogans identified with OA, were forbidden to us to use. We
petitioned OA on several occasions for permission to quote from these
sources, and were repeatedly turned down.
Because our loops and meetings didn't have access to any program
literature other than the Big Book of AA, we decided that we would make
our own daily meditation book, and call it "Recovery Meditations--One
Day At A Time."
The idea behind Recovery Meditations is that it is written by the very
people who will use it: the members of The Recovery Group community.
However, we have decided that we will take a different track than OA. The
Recovery Group has decided to maintain a very liberal use policy
concerning our meditations. We will own the copyright, but will allow
anyone to use, quote, or cite our project, so long as the work is to be
used by individuals or members of any recovery-related group.
We have definite plans to have this published as an actual book, and
maybe even a calendar.
Thus far, we have over 6 months' worth of meditations, and continue to
strive for a full year of Experience, Strength and Hope. These meditations
are written by people just like you or me. They are recovering compulsive
overeaters. They come from all walks of life, all cultures, from all over
the world.
We'd love to have your Experience, Strength and Hope to add to our
project. If you haven't written a meditation for us, please consider it.
Here's what to do:
That's all there is to it! It's easy, and it's a great way to do service
and spread the message of hope to other compulsive overeaters. You don't
have to be a "writer" to contribute, so please don't let that stop you. If
you'd like to see some examples of meditations already received, you can
go to
http://recovery.hiwaay.net/meditations/december.html
If enough of you will write a meditation for us, not only could we finish up this book, but
we might even have enough for a second!
So there you have it, the history of Recovery Meditations, and what you
can do to help us finish up our project. We sure hope to hear from you
soon! And if you need ideas to write about, just drop us a line at the
above address...we'll be happy to give you some topic ideas!
~ DANNY'S CORNER ~
Dear God,
INTO ACTION should be the key words spoken at all fellowship meetings.
Yes they are and should be a place of social action and for many it's the
only social contact in their lives where they are accepted and loved
without conditions. You have given me so much and my life is as promised
in the big book with the ability to see that my size is not anybody else's
concern and I am not to expect people to know what to do with me,
especially in a medical situation where they may not have yet had the
experience of dealing with the terminally obese. I find that
explaining my difficulties and offering the logistical solution, if there
is one, helps them, me and the guy behind me. Thanks for that one.
While I'm saying thanks it seems appropriate for me to thank You for
giving me the vehicle to bring my butt down to a size where it fits most
airline and theatre seats. It can't be easy dealing with COEs in all our
raging glory ... thanks for caring enough to send the very best. So my
prayer for today is that You give my brothers and sisters in the
fellowship the awareness that when they see part of the fellowship broken
THEY should lovingly try to fix it, not just see that it's broken. When
we go to a meeting, f2f or online, it's what we bring to that meeting that
determines what we leave it with.
You take care of me, the family, friends, fellow loopies, those who still
suffer and the guys I just don't like. The power to do and knowledge of
your will is expected, just for today.
AND WHY NOT......Danny
Staying in the Moment
I'm Sherry, a compulsive overeater. My sponsor has been working with me consistently on how to
stay in the moment in order to stay out of fear. This has been an ongoing defect for me and I continue
to pray to have this removed. Recently, when I was meditating, the image and thought of an elevator
came to mind. My HP walked me through a whole scenario of an elevator and that is what I'd like to
share, and hopefully I can tie it into "staying in the moment".......
I used to be clostrophobic but that has lessened with time, so now an elevator isn't so uncomfortable
and terrifying as it used to be. My HP guided me in my mind to go into an elevator, and I envisioned
that it was comfortable, quite large, and I was the only person in the elevator with my HP. I trusted in
my HP to never allow the elevator to crash to the bottom of the shaft and was at peace in the elevator.
I could see the panel, which would light up as a floor came up, and I would move up/down with the
elevator and felt serene and cared for.
I started, though, to feel anxious, fearful and agitated as I thought
about a floor that was lighting up and what I would find if the elevator stopped there and opened.
I was obsessed with watching the panel lights and the elevator door, wondering and fearing what I
would find if or when the elevator stopped on that floor, and who would be there.
In my life, the
elevator relates to being in the moment, not fearing what the next moment might bring but trusting
that my HP will be with me through each situation, no matter what. The area I found that gave me
the most fear and anxiety was when I didn't know the outcome of a situation (what floor I'd get off on).
In reality, even when I think I know the outcome I truly don't because it's out of my control.
So slowly, through working the steps, going to meetings and communicating with my sponsor,
I'm learning to be content and peaceful as I go from one moment to the next without being aware
or assured of the outcome. I am so grateful to my HP that I've been given a program and a way
of life to continually learn how to live in a closer conscious contact with my HP and therefore receive
a little bit more serenity each day.
As I finished writing this, it came to me that the elevator panel in
my mind could also be floors listed from 1 through 12. I guess that's another meditation waiting to be
explored!
Thank you for allowing me to share.
When I think of the years of my life, and they have been quite a few, I wonder what legacy I will leave for my children, my grandchildren and my friends.
I sit in my little corner of my life deep inside of my heart, and I see all the hurt and pain that others are not privy to, only my God knows what is in my heart.
I reach out to my fellow man. I see one in the depths of compulsive eating. They may be drowning and I have a life line to throw out to them.
It is a line that one day I caught myself to save me from the ravages of the overwhelming waves of the sea that was out to destroy me. Saved just in the nick of time.
>From that life line came hope. Hope from the despair of this life that drove me to the insanity of compulsive overeating. Hope for the future. Hope for a new life and learned lessons. Hope for the ability to cope. Hope that allows me to extend my hand in fellowship and service, allowing me to serve one day at a time with the fellowship of my companion fellows.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to compulsive overeaters and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Looking back to my first step in recovery from COE through the twelfth step I'm reviewing my use of the recovery tools, wondering and checking that I've utilized all tools to the max. The recovery tools are A Plan of Eating, Sponsorship, Meetings, Telephone, Writing, Literature, Anonymity, and Service. Hmmmmmm.
A Plan of Eating... was already taken out of my hands by my wiser than I Diabetes Team ... So I'm OK there.
Sponsorship... I aquired one of the sponsors in our group and it has been a 'blessed' relationship with a fellow diabetic, Christan, and now a dear friend ... God was wise here !!
Meetings... They are hard to go to on a regular basis but I do make some f2f meetings. My other meetings are in Recovery's meeting rooms -- a blessing if there ever was one!!! I love the people who show up like sisters!!! And I can hear and feel the love and concern even if they don't recognize me because of my wearing a 'diff' hat. Thank you for having such a place for us to go to!!
Telephone... Well, there is improvement needed here. I could talk to my f2f friends more if I weren't on line talking, reading, e-mailing, researching, and IM'ing so much.
Writing... I'm OK in the writing and journaling department ... in fact I've got little snippets all over my home in places I rest my 'laurels' long enough to write down a thought or whatever. Wonder what my family think as they glance at my stuff. Methinks they are used to it by now.
Literature... I grab everything I can find to read on COE, OA, AA, AL-anon, Co-dependence, etc. I could be a Walking Information Booth if my little itsy bitsy memory would retain it.
Anonymity... I do excellently here. I discovered early in my almost 70 years to keep my mouth shut where other people's business is concerned. But you get to talking with me about my business and I can drop the whole load at your feet in minutes!!! Can share very easily.
Service... Well, here comes what the program, recovery and 12 steps are all about. I have no problem with 'service', I've been serving all my life!! Oldest of 6 children with invalid mother (MS), alcoholic father, no relatives to step up to the plate to lend a hand ... so grew up serving the ones I love. As an adult, abandoned to be a single mother of 4, raising my family, served, educated, working nights to be a CNA at a hospital. Spiritually committed to God from age 16 ... trained, educated to be a teacher, youth counselor, and now attended bible college the last 3 years to serve senior adults. Although I still have a lot to learn (I haven't arrived yet), I do know and enjoy service. No one has to hog-tie me or drag me to the plow. I am always willing to learn more. Been told I have the tendancies of being a 'life time student'... oh well. At least I'm happy serving God in any way possible. "A life of sane and happy usefulness."
OA's responsibility pledge states: "Always to extend the hand and heart of OA to all who share my compulsion; for this, I am responsible." (For this...I am grateful.)
Thank you for listening to my 12 Step Share... Thank you for being here. God bless!!!!
The Promises from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous
"Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings."
When I began this journey to recovery, I really didn't even know what they were talking about when they said the "steps." Oh, somewhere in the back part of my mind, I knew about Twelve Step programs but I had never consciously really thought much about them. I am in amazement every time I think about my provincialism .... that such an important part of life had just slipped by me.
The more I go into my program, the more I see this as a program for everyone. There is literally NO one in my life who would not benefit from a program of working the 12 Steps. It may have started with Alcoholics Anonymous and continued on through NA, OA, Alanon and dozens of other 12-step programs .... but I see it as a way of life for everyone. Would I be overzealous if I suggested it be taught in high school?
Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings? How does one ask God something like that HUMBLY? I have a mental picture of me down on my knees with my eyes heavenward and my hands folded saying "Oh my God, wouldn't thou pleeeeeeze remove my shortcomings." And I would say that in the most contrite voice possible.
No, my friends, this is not what the Seventh Step means by being humble. So ... how do we work the seventh step with humility? I even wanted to grumble a little when I thought about having to do a step with humility. As COs we have suffered enough humiliation to last a lifetime. Part of being humble .... part of humility .... is acceptance. We must accept our character defects ... acknowledge them ..... and, as painful as that may be, by doing so we accept ourselves.
When we humbly accept ourselves .... we can take that wonderful Step Seven and tell God that we do. We can simply say to our Higher Power that we are this way. We want to be better. We want to be the best we can be. And because we know that only by the grace of God can we rid ourselves of our CDs, we plunge in head-first and HUMBLY ask Him to remove our shortcomings.

This OA Thing
There are some things on my mind this morning having to do with this OA
thing You sent us. One of those problems is that some folks forgot it was
Your idea to begin with and it's on loan only as long as we take care of
it. Before I go any further, thanks for allowing me to wake up to this
glorious day, to be alive and feeling well is a blessing. The leaning of
folks to complain about the condition of our fellowship is of itself a
good thing. Please have them look in the mirror and understand You put
those thoughts in their heads for them to act on, not to just think about
them.
Peace to you,

~ FROM THE LITERATURE ~
We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.
We will comprehend the word serenity.
And we will know peace.
No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our
experience can benefit others.
That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.
We will lose interest in selfish things and gain insight in our fellows.
Self-seeking will slip away.
Our whole attitude and outlook will change.
Fear of people and economic insecurity will leave us.
We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.
We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for
ourselves.
