This is difficult. It seems so simple. Who wouldn't ask to get rid of the short comings? Remember this is a goal and in this life will never end but we will handle that in the maintenance steps of 10,11, 12.
Humbly: not demanding, knowing where our strengths come from. Knowing we are not alone with our compulsion (an illness) or with any of our character defects that may be used as excuses not seeking to arrest our disease. Trusting a God who loves us unconditionally but does not want us to remain sick or be distracted from a relationship with Him and our opportunity to help our peers.
Asked: not demanded, without conditions, and with hope.
To remove: not to cover or excuse but asking Him to remove these defects that still circle around us and claw at our present life.
Shortcomings: failure at our possible best any one day that distracts us from our primary purpose.
So we have arrived at the spot that will separate the women from the girls and the men from the boys! And all we can do is ask. It is simple but also frightening to some. The At this point we say, offer and intend to mean the words of the 7th Step prayer or use one of our heart or faith that means the same thing.
The 7TH STEP PRAYER: BB P. 76
My Creator, I am willing that you should have all of me good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen
Here also is the third step as given in the BB on page 63
God I offer myself to the- to build with me and to with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage o self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy power, Thy love and Thy way of life. May I do Thy will always! Amen.
If you have said the 7th Step Prayer in the place of your choice and possibly with the person of your choice you have taken step 7 and are ready for step 8.
Many of us old timers use some form of these steps each day. My shortcut is Thy will be done in my whole life and especially with my food.
1. Why is this step frightening?
2. What have I done to avoid this step in the past?
3. After doing 4,5,6 have I found other Character defects to add to my list?
4. How can I let go of old attitudes which block humility, such as low self-esteem, status-seeking, and self-righteousness! (p.62 in our 12/12)
5. Which character traits that have hurt me have become great assets when applied to the right things at the right times? (p.65 in our 12/12)
